Retiring my HTC Thunderbolt for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus

This is a sad and a joyful day. Verizon‘s HTC Thunderbolt was the first 4G LTE smartphone that I had. I remember the blazing speeds of receiving 10 – 20 mbps! However, as of today, December 15, 2011, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus has come out on Verizon. This is the first phone in America to have Android 4.0 (aka Ice Cream Sandwich). I am selling my HTC Thunderbolt on eBay (if you’re interested, hey let me know!) I will officially be getting the Samsung Galaxy Nexus tomorrow. I woke up at midnight last night to order online. I knew the Verizon stores would be sold out by the time I got off of work on December 15th. Therefore, I figured one more day of waiting isn’t going to hurt. Plus, I was guaranteed the phone then.

I will no longer be downloading custom HTC Thunderbolt ROMs and posting reviews on my site. However, I will continue to offer support and guidance for all past discussions to the best of my knowledge.

On top of that, I’m not sure how often I am going to be loading custom ROMs onto the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. I will have to wait until I get it. However, since this is pure Google, I will not have to worry about Verizon‘s bloatware on the phone. With that being said, I may bring WireValley back to talking about the latest technology going on in my life. I’m always looking to discuss with people the latest changes in the tech world on a more personal level.

Anyway, I will let you know how I like the Galaxy Nexus! From the reviews, it sounds like I’m going to LOVE it!

  1. While the Galaxy Nexus is clearly a beast of a phone, there are a few things you should be aware,

first, there is Verizon bloatware present on this phone.  While previous Nexus iterations did not have such shortcomings, this one unfortunately does not follow suit.

Second, its not pure google, but it is damm close.  The sad fact is as long as its a Verizon phone, Verizon will insist on its input.

None of these comments are intended to second guess your decision.  There are several reasons I have chosen to pass on the Galaxy Nexus, which really would be to long of a discussion.  Enjoy it though, my next new phone I suspect is about 3 months down the road

    • You are absolutely correct. Verizon did request Google wallet to be removed and verizon did add 2-3 of their apps such as the Backup app which backs up your contacts everyday. I I insist on having this app because I hate syncing contacts with Google cause all my really REALLY old contacts download. Anyway, verizons apps can be disabled if you’d like :-) but thanks for pointing this out so other readers are aware.

  2. So is the Galaxy Nexus’ display any WIDER than the HTC Thunderbolt? I was thinking of getting the Nexus but I don’t want to leave my Thunderbolt if the Nexus’ screen is thinner than the thunderbolts.

This is not smaller than the Thunderbolt. The nexus is bigger, but not in a bulky way. When i held them each hand in hand, the nexus is so sexy, sleeker, and is such a beutiful phone. If you opt for the nexus you wont regret it!

    • Its the same width just longer

  3. I would keep in mind of all the apps that wont be work with 4.0.  It is the first of its kind. I sell Verizon and to me, after having my TB for so long, the Rezound is the phone for me. ICS is coming out for it and the speed and camera keeps me with HTC over Samsung.  Just my opinions about the facts. Spec for Spec HTC all the way. I love music and Beats by Dre really enhance the phone, louder and clearer than phone of the passed. Enjoy the Nexus and Remember your LTE roots ( double meaning ) HTC lol Happy Holidays

    • So do you know if the screen is wider on the Nexus than on the TB?

      • I think it’s the same width, the phone is just longer.

        • That’s weird?? It has a big screen but just as wide?!

          • I know the bottom of the screen is for buttons since there’s no more physical buttons anymore (except for the power and volume buttons). But don’t quote me on the screen size. You’ll have to go to Verizon when you have free time and do the comparison. I didn’t do that too well. I shipped my Thunderbolt off pretty quick :-)
